Google Shuts Down Online Store

July 22, 2010GoogleNo Comments

The Google Online Store only sells one product: the Nexus One Android smart phone. Now, the store has been taken down and the Nexus One is no longer available through this specific channel.

When asked about the move, Google stated that the Nexus One has already achieved what Google wanted and expected of the handset. With many other Android devices already being released, it is hard to imagine that the Android community would insist that the handset stay available.

Either way, Vodafone UK is still offering the handset on certain contracts. Since it has not been announced how much stocks they have or how long they plan on offering the Nexus One, those who intend to own this Google branded smart phone ought to get one as soon as possible.

The Nexus One, despite not being a major selling handset, is actually an impressive piece of technology. The device comes with a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen display, providing users with both amazing visual quality as well as responsive and accurate touch controls. The 1GHz Qualcomm MSM7227 Snapdragon CPU gives the Nexus One all the necessary power and speed to handle any app and feature without skipping a beat.

The handset also comes with a 5 mega pixel camera, support for WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and all the usual smart phone features. Google has added in an upgraded version of the speech detection software –which gives the Nexus One speech to text features. Users can even use speech commands to initiate search queries as well.

This handset is loaded with Android 2.1 Éclair, and is compatible with the new Android 2.2 Froyo update. Froyo makes the Android OS run faster (both the UI and browser has been upgraded), and it will also be compatible with the newly launched Adobe Flash Player version 10.1.

Vodafone’s Twitter Thing: What Really Happened

February 11, 2010VodafoneNo Comments

Vod TwitFriday afternoon was pretty amusing for some folks subscribing to the Vodafone UK Twitter posts.

It turns out that a little prank got a little out of hand that ended up with a very offensive post getting out in public and an employee being suspended. Amid worries and concerns about the account having been accessed by hackers, employees of the mobile network operator acted promptly and swiftly to fix the mess and have everything back in order by the end of the day.

With the smoke now cleared and the matter settled internally, Vodafone UK’s head of web relations Jakub Hrabovsky now speaks to explain what happened on that afternoon:

“Since the inappropriate tweet that was published through @VodafoneUK on Friday there have been many questions and theories (some slightly wild) about what actually happened. Therefore, we can now share what actually took place”.

“On Friday one of the members of the Web Relations team who was moderating the company Twitter account left his computer for a minute to ask a colleague some advice. Another member of staff who is unconnected with the Web Relations team saw his colleagues screen open and assuming it was his colleague’s personal Twitter account and posted the inappropriate tweet”.

“Within minutes we realized what had happened and issued an apology. The individual who posted the tweet was suspended with immediate effect and an internal investigation is now underway. We have strict guidelines with respect to all the social media we use and we are naturally upset that a rogue incidence like this could happen”.

For those who missed the Tweet, it said

“@Vodafone UK: is fed up of dirty homos and is going after beaver.”

Ah yes, never a boring moment in the mobile phone industry.

Prices Confirmed for Vodafone’s iPhone Deals

December 23, 2009Apple3 Comments

iphone_vodafoneVodafone knows that it will have to compete with Tesco, Orange Mobile UK and O2 for a piece of the iPhone market, and while many of its current subscribers would no doubt be tempted to get the 3GS, they are setting their sights on getting even more people from outside their current clients.

Vodafone’s offer will not be in the line of cheaper prices. According to the CEO of Vodafone UK, it is service and stability that will get iPhone users to sign up for Vodafone’s offers. At the moment, Vodafone is boasting to have the most stable, the fastest and most reliable network for iPhone users.

This is a pretty big boast, but according to the CEO, the company has had a year’s worth of preparations in order to support the device.

Right now, users of the Apple iPhone often suffer from connection problems such as lags, intermittent connections and similar issues. These problems are situated from the service provider and not the device itself. This is why people have been tired of having a single provider for the iPhone for two years. October saw the first competition for the iPhone between O2 and Orange Mobile. Tesco Mobile joined later on and Vodafone confirmed that they too would be releasing the phone.

Vodafone is currently offering the 32GB unit for free at an 80 Pound monthly tariff that lasts for 18 months. The plan also gives the subscriber 3000 minutes of talk time and unlimited messages and WiFi as well as 1GB of data downloads. Vodafone also has a 30 Pound per month offer that will last for 24 months. At this rate, the 8GB iPhone is 45 Pounds and the plan comes with 300 minutes of talk time as well as 1 GB of data and unlimited messages and WiFi.
