T-Mobile G1 Touch
The T-Mobile G1 Touch is the latest phone to have been released on the Google Android OS. Though the phone gives the initial impression of being a pretender, a couple of minutes of usage of the phone should convince you to think otherwise.
The display of the T-Mobile G1 Touch is quite good and, though it is a tad smaller than the display found on the iPhone, the screen overalledly is better than that of the iPhone, so that’s an encouraging start.
As for setting up the phone, quite strangely, you need a Google account if you are to start doing anything with the phone – this includes even activating the phone on the T-Mobile network. Since I really hadn’t purchased their G1 plan, I couldn’t really get the phone activated for use immediately so I had to get some help from T-Mobile in order to get the phone activated. I didn’t realise the problem immediately and had to grope around for a couple of days before calling the customer service.
However, once you activate it, you will get the main screen, where there are 4 default icons – dialer, contacts, browser and maps – in that order. The order gives perfect priority to each of the functions.
There were plenty of apps which came bundled with the G1. This included IM, Email client, a music player, a built – in calendar, integration with Amazon MP3 and mobile YouTube. The Voice Dialer function is also present, enabling you to dial a contact’s number by just mentioning their name. This function has become commonplace for a couple of years now as far as Nokia phones are concerned, so it’s very applaudable that HTC decided to get it on board as well.
However, the best app by a long distance is the Google Maps, which really kills with its pinpoint accuracy!
The full – QWERTY of the T-Mobile G1 Touch served to make the G1 extremely heavy and the choice of colour scheme on the keyboard is quite disappointing, blacking out some keys when in the dark!
