UK Debut of the Bite Size Modu 1

July 16, 2010GeneralNo Comments

Size does matter in choosing a mobile phone that is right for you. While there are already a handful of sleek, classy mobile phones out in the market, there is only one modular mobile phone. Meet the Modu, the world’s lightest handset. This means that you will now be able to call, send text messages and play music using a device that weighs only 40.1 g. There is even Bluetooth connectivity and a 2 GB internal storage.

Bluetooth connectivity is also present, as well as MP3 playing capability and a (non-expandable) 2 GB internal storage capacity. Since the mobile phone measures only 72.1 mm high, 37.6 mm wide and 7.8 mm thick, it can only house a 1.3 inch screen. The OLED display is able to show up to 65 thousand colors, decent enough but the size of the screen may not be for everyone.

If you are worried that you may fumble with the lightweight Modu, you can always just go for a “jacket”. These jackets add new features, such as a 3.2 megapixel camera, or convert your mobile phone into, say, an 8 inch digital photo frame charging dock.

You can also turn it into a fitness buddy with its pedometer option. If you can’t sleep without a night light, the Modu can be slipped on an ambient light jacket for your convenience.

The miniscule gadget has made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, being deemed the lightest in the world. This innovative device first came out in its home country of Israel about 2 years ago, but fortunately, the Purely Gadgets website is going to sell them exclusively for the UK market. They will cost 129.99 GBP a unit and a Modu jacket can come with it at a discounted price. Check it out at the web store this month.

The Samsung Galaxy S Displays a Powerful Combination of Design and Efficiency

July 6, 2010SamsungNo Comments

The Samsung Galaxy S i9000 has been on the market just recently, but is generating quite a lot of positive reviews from mobile phone fans and critics alike. It comes as no surprise as this latest offering from Samsung is their most technologically advanced mobile phone ever.

Cellular and internet access channels

Communication-wise, the phone provides the best in both network and internet connectivity. It has both class 12 EDGE and GPRS which provide access to cellular networks as well as 3G for fast internet connection where available. The phone also provides Wi-Fi support in hotspots for fast and free internet access. Wireline and wireless connectivity is provided by microUSB and Bluetooth, respectively, to exchange data with other compatible devices. Many Samsung Galaxy S deals have inclusive data allowances so you should be online in no time.

Android at the phone’s core

The Samsung Galaxy S has a fast and efficient ARM Cortex A8 1GHz processor beneath its hood with the popular Android 2.1 operating system (Éclair) on top. The device comes in 8 GB and 16 GB models which can be upgraded up to 32 GB by way of a MicroSD card slot if more storage space is required.

The Samsung Galaxy S i9000 handset boasts an extra-large 4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with a capability to display 16 million colours at 480×800 pixels screen resolution. Further screen enhancement is provided by the phone’s TouchWiz 3.0 user interface which provides multiple home screens that are easy to navigate and highly-responsive to finger gestures.

Upload photos to social networking sites

The Samsung Galaxy S ships with a 5 megapixel digital camera which displays 2592 x 1944 pixels image resolution. The snapper features autofocus, smile and face detection, touch focus and geo-tagging functions. You can take professional-looking photos and upload it right away to your social networking sites as the phone provides superb integration to the popular social networks. The camera can also record video with 720p quality at 30 fps.

Out of the Box: Finally, a Useful Manual for Mobile Phones

June 4, 2010GeneralNo Comments

Print is definitely not dead with the “Out of the Box” mobile phone instruction manuals. Thanks to Vitamins Design’s Adrian Westaway and Clara Gaggero, teaching the tech illiterate how to operate a smart phone may not be such a problem.

Out of the Box works kind of like a picture book. The picture is your mobile phone and the instructions point directly to it in order to show the user precisely how to turn on, say, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

In the video demo, the parts of the mobile phone (SIM card, battery, chassis and battery cover) are already packed into the instruction book. The user is then instructed to place the SIM card and battery inside the mobile phone and start it up himself. It looks like even a kid or an old person can do it without any problems since the instructions are concise.

Another manual is provided to teach the user how to navigate through the many different menus in order to make the mobile phone perform a certain function. The user simply has to turn to the section which includes the instructions to whatever he wants to accomplish, place the mobile phone in the space provided and follow the bulleted steps. The sections are divided much like an old school address book so getting to a specific part of the manual will be a breeze.

The demo photos of the Out of the Box manual include other possible implementations, such as the use of picture cards and map guidelines. It really looks promising and if this gets to be marketed for real, a big chunk of the non-tech savvy population may just be convinced to buy their own smart phone.

Since Vitamins Design worked with Samsung on this project, it may just open up a new market for the Korean brand. Hopefully they will use recycled materials to make it a bit friendlier to the environment.
