Archive for the ‘Nokia’ Category
We just came across a neat little site called archive.org, also known as The Way Back Machine. This site allows you to check out cached versions of websites from the past. What’s really interesting about this is it can give us a little snapshot of the state of the mobile industry in years past. For instance, we did a search for mobile phone comparison site best-mobile-contracts.co.uk and discovered that at the earliest archived date (May 2007), the Nokia E61 was the front page phone to own. You could get your hands on one for as little as £20 per month with 50 minutes of talk time and 75 text messages.
Three years is a long time in the mobile industry and the old Nokia E61 hasn’t really stood the test of time, sadly. No touchscreen, no camera and a 220 MHz processor that would be laughed at in the high end market today. It did have a full QWERTY keyboard and WiFi support, though, which is nice. Still, we think you’d expect a little more power for your twenty quid a month these days… We’ve come a long, long way.

We all know how Nokia announced earlier this year that they would be making their Ovi maps satellite navigation a free service. This big announcement changed the way that people viewed GPS features –not as a function of leisure, but as a common commodity that enabled people to explore and visit new places all over the world.
The Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition is a basic candy bar handset that gives users the extra benefit of GPS capabilities. The phone connects to Nokia’s Ovi network and provides the user with up to date information and directions on how to get to specific destinations. This is a big convenience for many people and since the Nokia 2710 is a budget handset, it basically means that Nokia has truly made sat nav a service that everyone can attain.
And while one might not think much of sat nav technology and GPS, it is actually a pretty big thing. Many businesses and small stores benefit a lot from GPS navigation services –some shops have thrived on the fact that they have been tagged as a ‘point of interest’ on maps –directing more customers their way.
Most people, when visiting a new town or someplace similar, would prefer to stick to main roads and avoid areas that are hard to navigate. But with the aid of a GPS device, getting around and seeing the sights is now a freedom of choice. Yes, satellite navigation is also a tool of cultural growth and experience.
Overall, the Nokia 2710 is a pretty decent mobile phone. Not that it can do much aside from provide directions, connect to GPRS/EDGE networks and for accessing the Ovi store. But in that regard, it does plenty for a basic mobile device –and one that standard GSM phone users should consider switching to.

They used to be leaders in the mobile manufacturing industry. But with reports of losses quarter by quarter since last year, both Nokia and Sony Ericsson are just about running out of options to hit high margins. To salvage their losses, both companies are on the verge of releasing high-end mobile devices in time for the Christmas rush.
The seemingly continuing loss was brought about by the economic slump, affecting largely Nokia’s market shares as well as that of Sony Ericsson. Instead of purchasing new mobile devices, people are zipping their purses in favor of more important expenditures. With slow consumer spending, both the sales and margins of the two companies are undoubted most hurt in the industry.
On the other hand, the surge of high-end products from stiff competitors such as Apple and Samsung widened the gap even more. With the release of iPhone3GS from Apple and Samsung’s Jet Smart phone, the sales of both Sony Ericsson and Nokia nosedived steadily from one quarter to the next.
Finnish pride in mobile phone making Nokia Corporation reported earlier that it will upgrade its projections for the global network infrastructure market, cutting by half its prediction of 10% fall for this year.
As for Sony Ericsson, analysts are divided on its pursued ventures, particularly after the poor performance during the second quarter. Though no sharper drop has been witnessed, some analysts are considering the gaining Swedish currency and the regional market posing plenty of uncertainties still.
While it seems the factors weighing down recovery attempts of both Nokia and Sony Ericsson seem piling, there are fairly high expectations that their pursuits will go smooth. This, because both companies had their larger investments cut down for the first six months of 2009. This is seen a good sign of catching up.

The X3 is notable for being the first Symbian Series40 phone to come integrated with Nokia’s OVI store. The phone has a 3.2 megapixel camera, a compact size and a 2.2 inch screen. Support for 16 GB microSD memory cards, stereo speakers and the dedicated music buttons beside the screen are some of the other highlights of this phone.

When you think of market – domination, you would be a perfectly normal person to think Nokia. We have gradually seen Nokia dominate all segments of the mobile phone market with awesome phones and now they have decided to venture into uncharted territory. Yes, it’s the netbook market. Though you don’t often see us reviewing netbooks or laptops or the likes, when you consider the fact that it’s made by Nokia, we couldn’t help but get a bit excited by it, so lets see whether all the debates in Nokia Conversations and the Nokia Booklet 3G Reviews are actually right in being positive about it.
Some of the more inhospitable people would like to call the Nokia Booklet 3G a fancy netbook when you consider the fact that it has a 10.1 inch screen in addition to an Atom processor. However, it must be said here that the resolution of the LCD screen is much better than what you generally find in netbooks. Another major highlight of this netbook when compared to the other netbooks out there is the support for integrated 3G wireless. You can also use your data SIM with the netbook, avoiding the need to carry around a USB dongle.
The netbook runs on the Microsoft Windows 7, which is quite strange as most other netbooks haven’t migrated to this OS yet. The netbook will also come with the latest version of Nokia Ovi Maps pre-installed as well as an A-GPS receiver.
Video output is amazing with the HDMI port. The netbook, according to Nokia, can last for 12 hours, which is quite amazing, but you must note that this is only for normal usage and not when you use it as a download – hub or as your personal music player. Wi-Fi connectivity is also present in the netbook, as is Bluetooth connectivity.
You should be able to get the netbook for £520 retail or for less on Nokia Booklet 3G contracts with mobile service providers.
