The Lenovo LePhone Is Paving the Way

January 28, 2010LenovoNo Comments

Lenovo LePhoneLenovo recently announced that it would be making its first ever mobile phone available to the Chinese market some time in May (2010). Lenovo is a noted mobile computer manufacturer and this is their first foray into the handset market. It looks like they are attempting to either succeed or fail with guns blazing. They have crafted a very good phone with excellent specs.

The Lenovo LePhone has a nearly 4.0 inch (3.7 in) 800 x 480 capacitive touch screen display.  It has two cameras, one on the front of the phone and one on the back. The one on the back of the handset is 3 megapixels. This seemingly impressive mobile phone utilizes a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon, has A-GPS, Wi-Fi and a removable battery.

The LePhone is similar in appearance to the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid in that it is a clamshell snap-on.

Users will benefit from a 3.55 headphone jack, 3G connectivity and will be able to add more memory to handset via the phone’s microSD card.

There are numerous apps that can be used with the phone, including a new media player with DivX support. Those who enjoy social networking will be able to access some of the more popular ones, such as Facebook, right from the handset.

Even though this smartphone is featured-packed, Lenovo is positioning it as a starter phone and is reportedly going to be selling it pretty cheaply, at least relative to other smartphones. This may be a good move considering this is the first time they are entering the market and have lots of competition from the likes of Nokia and HTC. It might be a harder sell, trying to get mobile phone buyers to pay top dollar to an unknown company. Once they are able to establish themselves, their brand and are able to get some handset success under their belt, shoppers will be more apt to spend top dollar for one of their mobile phones. We look forward to seeing how cheap the Lenovo LePhone on contract will be.
