In this modern day and age, more and more people are using the internet to keep in touch with friends and family. Whether it be through simple emails, or by using social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, people all over the world are talking to each other, and thanks to technology it is possible to send an email in the UK, for it to be received only 10 seconds later in Australia.
All technology develops and changes all the time and mobile phones are no exception to this. For the last couple years mobile phones have used new technology to allow people to use Facebook and MySpace directly from their phone, but there have often been troubles such as loading speeds or incorrect layout. The new phone from Sony Ericsson, the Xperia X10 is a phone designed especially for communication purposes.
Using a special new program called Timescape, all your conversations and text messages are grouped in one window. Basically, you can view all your messages from Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, your emails and text messages in the same window to save you going from page to page which many get confusing and be a time hassle, especially if you are in a hurry. You can also reply to all the messages from this one window, which is great for fast replying to various messages. The Sony Ericsson phone comes complete with a built in FM radio, designed for giving you your favorite music whilst on the go, in places where you may not be able to listen to loud music. A wireless headset is included to make sure you do not disturb other people. The phone is due in Q1 2010 when we will be able to pick up the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 on contract.

Apple is attempting to turn tablet into mainstay in our homes; and judging from the launch of the Apple iPad, they just might succeed.
While many people already rely on the internet for communication and staying in touch, the one thing that makes it so hard to combine the internet with daily life is the difficulty of picking it up when you are busy and the difficulty of putting it down when you have time.
It is common to access 3G on a mobile phone, share and upload a couple of pictures then post a quick message or two. But it is still a very trimmed down version of a full internet experience that only a net book or a desktop computer can bring. On the other hand, booting up a computer takes ages and having to leave the computer seat once you are in is very difficult (one of the best ways to lose track of time really).
The Apple iPad is easy to pick up when needed and easy to put down when you are done; literally.
The device is meant to be used as is, when the need arises. This means that if you just want peruse that Facebook album of yours, then go right ahead. When you are done, just put down the device. The iPad is meant for everyday use. The only real concern now is how you will manage to keep the tablet from falling off the table.
Apple crammed in some hefty hardware on this gizmo. A 9.7 inch touch screen display gives you a resolution of 1024 x 786 pixels (equivalent to a decent net book screen). It also has a 1GHz processor for handling browsing, games and apps.

Lenovo recently announced that it would be making its first ever mobile phone available to the Chinese market some time in May (2010). Lenovo is a noted mobile computer manufacturer and this is their first foray into the handset market. It looks like they are attempting to either succeed or fail with guns blazing. They have crafted a very good phone with excellent specs.
The Lenovo LePhone has a nearly 4.0 inch (3.7 in) 800 x 480 capacitive touch screen display. It has two cameras, one on the front of the phone and one on the back. The one on the back of the handset is 3 megapixels. This seemingly impressive mobile phone utilizes a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon, has A-GPS, Wi-Fi and a removable battery.
The LePhone is similar in appearance to the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid in that it is a clamshell snap-on.
Users will benefit from a 3.55 headphone jack, 3G connectivity and will be able to add more memory to handset via the phone’s microSD card.
There are numerous apps that can be used with the phone, including a new media player with DivX support. Those who enjoy social networking will be able to access some of the more popular ones, such as Facebook, right from the handset.
Even though this smartphone is featured-packed, Lenovo is positioning it as a starter phone and is reportedly going to be selling it pretty cheaply, at least relative to other smartphones. This may be a good move considering this is the first time they are entering the market and have lots of competition from the likes of Nokia and HTC. It might be a harder sell, trying to get mobile phone buyers to pay top dollar to an unknown company. Once they are able to establish themselves, their brand and are able to get some handset success under their belt, shoppers will be more apt to spend top dollar for one of their mobile phones. We look forward to seeing how cheap the Lenovo LePhone on contract will be.

The Motorola BACKFLIP will be available in stores sometime in 2010. The existence of the handset was confirmed by the mobile giant at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show). This isn’t standard protocol but was how Motorola decided to announce the soon-to-be arrival of its latest Android. This will be their third. The previous ones were the Cliq and the Droid.
One of the unique features of the handset is the keyboard. It is what is known as a foldover reverse flip QWERTY. This reverse flip action is how the phone got its name. The keyboard appears to be a bit odd at first but ends up working really nice.
The Backflip has a nice sized screen at 3.1 inches. It is a HVGA. The mobile comes standard with a 5 megapixel camera, which is one of the better mobile phone camera phones on the market. Many of the lower end phones stick with 3.0 megapixels or lower.
The Motorola Backflip works on the 3 G network, allows individuals to GPS their way out of being lost and offers Wi-Fi connectivity.
The Backtrack is one of the phone’s coolest features. It allows individuals to flip through their pictures, texts and emails on the back of the phone where ones view of the main screen is not hindered by their fingers and/or hands. The phone’s keypress is decent and the MotoBlur content delivery feature allows individuals to keep their social networks, emails and phone content in one place.
The recently announced Motorola Backflip appears to be a quality phone, at least based on the specs. They are pretty impressive. The phone has a nice camera at 5.0 pixels and a good size screen (3.0 inches). There hasn’t been any word on price so it’s not yet possible to get the entire picture in terms of value, but so far, it looks good. Motorola keeps on pushing these Androids with the Backflip being the third. I suppose if it is a success we should expect to keep seeing them.

The new Sony Ericsson Elm looks just like your normal phone. It performs just like you would expect from a phone. And it has all the same features as a standard phone would have. But there is something that sets it apart from other phones. The new Sony Ericsson Elm is the latest handset in a new range of environmentally friendly phones that use various different methods of production to reduce the impact on the environment.
Using mainly recycled household plastic for the body the Elm helps to cut down on harmful chemicals used in the normal manufacturing of phones and also saves the customer a bit of money. The way the phone is made is also environmentally friendly, with the factories using new technology to reduce the amount of emissions released. Aside from the environmental benefit the new Sony Ericsson phone brings, it also has some great features to go with it.
The 5 megapixel camera allows even the most professional photographer to get great results from what you are using, and will be more than adequate to take photos of your favorite times and help to preserve good memories. After taking the photo, you can apply some basic editing on the phone, and then transfer to a computer via USB. Or alternatively, you can use the built in Facebook application to upload the photo directly onto your Facebook, great for saving you time and effort. With many widgets for you to set, you can be just a click away from your favorite applications, saving you going through the menus to get to what you want. The new Elm from Sony Ericsson is due to be released in the first quarter of 2010, perfect for those of you with some Christmas money left over to spend.

Pushing forward against all odds can seem like a bit of folly for some, but this is one of the reasons why Sony Ericsson managed to stay on top of the game despite many consecutive years of losses. The financial state of the company is not transparent for us to see, but judging from the joint venture’s 2009 losses, it is obvious that they just might need a Hail Mary pass if the company is going to survive next year.
Simply put, Sony Ericsson lost about 836 million Euros and unless they generate some big sales this year, many are predicting that the company might not be able to keep up.
Bert Nordberg thinks otherwise:
“The refreshed portfolio, coupled with the business transformation programme has started to positively impact our financial results.
We will continue to focus on returning the company to profitability by establishing Sony Ericsson as the communication entertainment brand based on an exciting portfolio of mid- and high-end products, such as our recently announced Android-based phone, the Xperia X10.
2010 will still be challenging as the full benefit of cost improvements will not impact results until the second half of the year, however we are confident that our business is on the right track.”
Folly? The words came straight from the president of Sony Ericsson. This is not blind bravado, aside from the much anticipated Snapdragon Android XPERIA X10, the SE Vizaz, Kanna and Robyn are also due to be released this year. There is also a growing demand for the eco-friendly Greenheart phones (it has also been reported that SE is working on a new Greenheart WinMo phone).
Indeed, unlike the rest of us looking back at SE’s problems and why the company had a bad performance; Sony is pushing forward and focusing on what it can do to perform better.
