Samsung Blue Earth Launched

Samsung S7550 Blue EarthKorean mobile phone giant Samsung has just unraveled its latest environment-friendly mobile phone to join the growing lists of similar green handsets – the Samsung Blue Earth. We got to see its first outing at the 2009 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona early this year but somehow got buried under a slow of stunning handsets released one after another over the last few months.

A Commitment to Mother Earth

The Blue Earth may look like just another touchscreen smartphone, but it is a significant contribution to the save-the-earth movement. That’s what JK Shin, EVP and head of the Mobile Communication Division at Samsung Electronics had to say about it. He further adds that towards this ends, the Blue Earth uses “reclaimed materials, in this case plastic water bottles…free from Brominated flame retardants, PVC and phthalate.  It can be charged using a set of solar panels on the reverse.”

That, in a nutshell, describes the Blue Earth’s environment friendly features. Nothing is too small for the effort.

Smartphone Features

Its eco-friendly features aside, the Samsung Blue Earth is a versatile smartphone with the features that define an upscale high performing handset.  It’s a GSM handset that works on GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA data networks.  It has a 3-inch touchscreen display, WiFi, Bluetooth and a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash.  While memory is a bit most at 180 MB, you can expand it from its microSD slot for up to 14 GB.

Software-wise, there’s a unique “Eco Mode” which automatically dims the display backlight as disengages Bluetooth when not in use. It also has this application called Eco Walk that tells you your contribution to help reduced carbon emission as well as acts like a pedometer when you walk instead of taking your car. In addition, there’s full internet browsing and an uploading facility to update all your social networking sites in a flash.

Availability

Samsung is releasing the Blue Earth first in Sweden and then the rest of Europe and Asian countries to follow.  We hope to see this in time for Christmas.
